A program that provides education, nutrition and medical attention to young children while empowering families helping them break the cycle of poverty.
Purkal Youth Development have are collaborating with a school which provides free education to the poorest children in the rural village of Purkal. Located in northern India, the school teaches some 60 three to five year olds in association with their sister organization, Stree Shakti Samiti. This organisation empowers women by teaching them handicraft and entrepreneurial skills, then organises them into groups of up to ten to form their own businesses making and selling their products.
To assist these women the pre-school frees up time for the mothers to pursue their work with Purkal. At the school children are given a basic education which is essential for entry into mainstream schools. Often coming from impoverished backgrounds, the program also provides much needed dietary nutrition for all the enrolled children which includes milk, much needed by children in this age group. Basic medical care is also provided through the center.

Insider Journeys is pleased to support the nutritional program for these young children. Our assistance helps provide a morning snack, healthy lunch and evening meal to children that come from families that are stretched to provide regular meals, let alone a balanced diet.
The preschool is really working to end the cycle of poverty by not only providing early education and nutrition for these children, but by empowering their mothers to earn an income for the family.
