Small Group Tour Itinerary

2018

DAY 1: BEIJING
On arrival in Beijing, transfer to your hotel, and meet your fellow travellers and Tour Leader (or local guide).

Hotel: Novotel Beijing Xinqiao (or similar)

DAY 2: TIANANMEN SQUARE & FORBIDDEN CITY
Visit the Beijing Planning Exhibition Hall to get a glimpse of the city’s development. Discover Beijing’s impressive sites including Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City. Explore the traditional residential alleyways known as ‘hutongs’ and enjoy a home-cooked lunch with a local family. Gain a glimpse into ‘hutong’ life with a rickshaw ride through the narrow laneways. Stroll to the city’s famous Drum Tower, once used to mark the passing of time. Enjoy a free evening to explore the vibrant nightlife around your hotel.

DAY 3: GREAT WALL OF CHINA
Travel to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall of China to explore this incredible creation. This evening, choose to join an optional Peking duck dinner.

DAY 4: BEIJING TO XIAN
Visit the iconic Temple of Heaven, a perfect example of Ming architecture and a symbol of Beijing. Explore the magnificent Summer Palace filled with temples, pavilions and gardens. In the afternoon, take the high-speed train to Xian.

DAY 5: XIAN CITY TOUR
Visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda before gaining insights at the Great Mosque. Walk through the Muslim Quarter to enjoy its lively street markets and fascinating local foods. Cycle along the top of the imposing Old City Walls, dating back to the 14th century.

Hotel: Mercure Xian on Renmin Square (or similar)

DAY 6: XIAN TO CHENGDU
Enjoy a morning stroll through Xian’s City Park, where local people gather daily to socialise and participate in a range of activities. Travel a short distance to the site of the Army of Terracotta Warriors. After lunch, and a short visit to a Terracotta Warrior Factory, fly to Chengdu.

DAY 7: GIANT PANDAS
Visit the Giant Panda Research & Breeding Base, where you have the opportunity to see Giant pandas and the Red panda. Visit the Dufu Gardens before stopping at the bustling People’s Park, where you can observe local daily life from the outdoor teahouses. Enjoy a visit to an English language group where locals gather to develop their English skills.

DAY 8: CHENGDU TO YANGTZE CRUISE
Enjoy a leisurely morning before taking the high-speed train to Chongqing located on the Yangtze River and the embarkation point for your cruise. For dinner, you may like to try a traditional hotpot before boarding your boat for the Yangtze River cruise.

DAY 9: YANGTZE CRUISE
Leave Chongqing behind as you cruise pass small towns whose existence is tied to the waters of the Yangtze. Stop at Shibaozhai, an impressive structure built against a steep hill and a name that means ‘precious stone fortress’. This evening, enjoy a buffet dinner on board.

DAY 10: THREE GORGES
Rise early and be rewarded with magnificent river landscapes as the ship passes through towering cliffs and mountains of the first and second gorges, Qutang and Wu Gorge. Later in the day, the ship enters the third of the main gorges called Xiling Gorge. This evening, join the Captain’s Banquet for dinner as the ship makes its way through the impressive five level shiplock and moors downstream of the Three Gorges Dam.

DAY 11: YICHANG TO SHANGHAI
Take an early morning excursion to the incredible site of the Three Gorges Dam Project before returning to the ship and continue cruising to Yichang, where the cruise ends. Fly to Shanghai, and spend time exploring the city independently.

DAY 12: SHANGHAI CITY TOUR
Enjoy a local-style breakfast before discovering the historical riverfront area known as the Bund. Veer off the tourist trail and visit Confucius Temple located in one of Shanghai’s oldest neighbourhoods. Continue to Yu Garden before exploring the incredible backstreets which are bustling with markets, street stalls and authentic local life. In the evening, enjoy a Chinese acrobat performance.

DAY 13: ZHUJIAJIAO 
Visit charming Zhujiajiao, a traditional water canal town. Enjoy a short cruise along the narrow canals to see old wooden waterside houses. Return to Shanghai and join your fellow travellers for a farewell dinner.

DAY 14: SHANGHAI
Transfer to the airport for your onward journey.
